The ALARA Committee Meeting was conducted at Zaporizhzhia NPP

Zaporizhzhia NPP hosted the ALARA Committee Meeting, which summed up the results of radiation protection and radiation safety in 2020 and outlined further areas of activities.

The monitoring of individual and collective doses of external radiation to the personnel of Zaporizhzhia NPP and contractors is carried out on the basis of the ALARA principle formulated by the IAEA. The implementation of the ALARA methodology is one of the important elements of the safety culture at nuclear power plants.

The purpose of ALARA is to minimize the exposure of personnel as low as reasonably achievable, taking into account economic and social factors.

At Zaporizhzhia NPP, the ALARA Committee meetings are conducted twice a year. In addition, the radiation safety and radiation protection specialists monitor all the activities related to radiation doses.

Based on preliminary data, the experts create forecasts of radiation doses during outages and develop measures aimed at maintaining the health of employees during their performance in the fields of ionizing radiation.

Among the effective measures to reduce radiation doses, there is the training of personnel on simulators-analogues of reactor equipment on the basis of the training complex of special training of Zaporizhzhia NPP Training Center. After completion of the activity training, the personnel perform their work faster, thus reducing the time spent near the radiation source.

“From year to year, using the experience of our colleagues from the Ukrainian plants, international experience and our own developments, we are moving towards reducing the impact of ionizing radiation on employees,” said the Head of ZNPP Radiation Safety Department Sergei Novoskoltsev.

Ensuring radiation protection of the personnel, population and environment is one of the priority tasks of Zaporizhzhia NPP and SE “NNEGC “Energoatom”.
