The implementation of a new project to optimize the equipment maintenance and repair is ongoing

A delegation consisting of representatives from the US Department of Energy, the Argonne National Laboratory (USA) and NT-Engineering (Ukraine) visited Zaporizhzhia NPP.

The purpose of the visit was to discuss the issues related to the implementation of the project to optimize the maintenance and repair of power unit equipment - through the implementation of a risk-informed approach for the NPP configuration management.

The work on this project has been underway since 2017, and Zaporizhzhia NPP will become the first in Ukraine to implement it. Unit 2 was selected for the pilot one.

At the meeting, Petro Kotin, General Manager of Zaporizhzhia NPP, introduced to the visitors the specialists who were directly related to that work. They provided all the information on the status of the project, which was being implemented in a timely manner.

The second issue was the discussion of another project – the assistance in the safety analysis of spent nuclear fuel storage at the Dry Spent Fuel Storage Facility.

A representative of the US Department of Energy, the program manager for Ukraine Damian Peko assured that safety issues were the most significant in the nuclear industry and were of priority in the implementation of any project. These issues do not contradict the possibility of safe maintenance of a part of the equipment during the operation of the power unit, which in turn will allow to reduce the time of outage and to increase the annual electrticity production. At the US power units, this economic approach to operation has been successfully implemented since 1970.

During the visit, the delegation visited the ZNPP Training Center and Unit 2.
