The location of the site for the DSFSF within the NPP territory was economically justified and was consistent with considerations of logic and safety. The large total capacity of the power units of Zaporizhzhia NPP also causes the appearance of a corresponding number of SFAs. The territory of ZNPP had free space for the site of SFAs intermediate storage. The close proximity of the storage site to power units is advantageous in terms of transport operations.
The site of the spent nuclear fuel storage system is located in the northeastern part of the territory of Zaporizhzhia NPP, at a relative elevation of 21.80. This site is contiguous to the NPP security zone on three sides. Along the fourth side of the DSFSF, a double fence, equipped with physical protection equipment, is built.
Geographically, the installations of the DSFSF are divided into three areas: loading area, transportation area and storage area.

The loading area is located in the buildings of the reactor compartments of power units 1 - 6, namely: in the central hall at 36.9 elevation, and in the transport corridor at 0.0 elevation. In these areas, the existing transport and technological equipment is used for loading and removal of spent nuclear fuel: the polar crane and refueling machine.
The transportation area is a network of roads along which concrete containers loaded with spent nuclear fuel are delivered from the loading area to the storage area. Transportation is carried out by a specially designed container conveyor provided for in this design.
The storage area is the actual DSFSF site provided for the installation of concrete storage containers. For the installation of containers on a storage place, the above-mentioned container conveyor is used.
The storage area capacity is 380 containers. The reinforced concrete platform is able to withstand the dynamic loads from the conveyor and the total static loads from the concrete containers installed on it.
