Documents and useful information about lifetime extension

The existence and development of any state is associated with power consumption. Electric power production per capita is considered to be the most important characteristic of living standards in any country.

Ukraine belongs to the list of countries with a high efficiency nuclear power industry. The peaceful atom of Ukraine has 15 power units, with installed capacity of 13,835 MW, which produce more than half of the power in the country. Zaporizhzhia generates almost 40 percent of all the electricity produced by Ukraine’s nuclear power plants and one-fifth of the country’s total electricity generation into the unified energy system.

One of the key tasks of the Operator of the Ukrainian NPPs – SE “NNEGC “Energoatom” - within the framework of the implementation of the provisions of the “Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2035” is to extend the lifetime of the operating units.

At Ukrainian nuclear power plants, including Zaporizhzhia NPP, the activities on extending the lifetime of power units is performed in accordance with the IAEA international standards and taking into account all the requirements of the SNRCU. The decision on the possibility of operation of each power unit over the design period shall be made by the SNRCU on the basis of the safety reassessment results.

Ukraine currently has 12 power units with extended service life, and five of them are the power units of Zaporizhzhia NPP.

  • September 13, 2016, State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine affirmed a decision to extend power unit №1 operational lifetime till December 23, 2025
  • October 3, 2016 - power unit №2 operational lifetime extended till February 19, 2026
  • November 3, 2017 - power unit №3 operational lifetime extended till March 5, 2027
  • October 11, 2018, State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine affirmed a decision to extend power unit №4 operational lifetime and set date of the following Periodic Safety Reassessment of the power unit on April 04, 2028.
  • On January 4, 2021, the State Nuclear Regulatory Committee of Ukraine decided to extend the lifetime of Unit 5 of Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and set the date of the next periodic safety reassessment of ZNPP Unit 5 - May 27, 2030.

Extension is a complex process that combines a range of scientific, technical and engineering measures, a large amount of substantiation work; upgrades performed using international safety experience.

The units that have already passed the extension procedure are equipped with modern equipment, the innovative systems have been implemented, and large-scale reconstruction and modernization have been carried out there. All these things are a guarantee of reliable and safe operation. All the performed works fully comply with the IAEA international standards, the legislation of Ukraine in the field of nuclear regulation, as well as the world experience of operation of nuclear facilities over the design period.

Now, using the vast experience, without exaggerating the “flow line” extension of five units, the personnel of Zaporizhzhia NPP is reviewing approaches to the implementation of a set of extension measures, optimizing and improving the process to extend the lifetime of the sixth unit without long-term outage.

The specialists of Zaporizhzhia NPP have set a goal to fully implement absolutely all the measures necessary for extension, until the end of the design life of Unit 6. This approach will significantly increase efficiency and improve the economic component of the use of power units over the design period.

The experience of extending the lifetime of the state nuclear fleet clearly demonstrates that the power units of Ukrainian nuclear power plants have a considerable margin of power. After extending the lifetime and carrying out all modernization and introduction of the latest technologies, the power units operate much safer and more efficiently than at the time of their start-up.

The process of extending the lifetime of five power units of Zaporizhzhia NPP has demonstrated enormous responsibility, consistent and balanced attitude to the implementation of all necessary measures not only by the plant staff, but also by the public of the control area and local government bodies.

Public hearings and meetings with the public in the process of extending the lifetime of the plant units created a lively dialogue between nuclear experts and the population of the control area, confirmed the interest in the leading power plant - Zaporizhzhia NPP.

For its part, Zaporizhzhia NPP, as the largest power generation facility in Ukraine, is aware of its responsibility for safety, reliability and stability of electricity production, and maintains an impeccable reputation as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly enterprise.

Zaporizhzhia NPP - we look to the future with confidence!
