Documents and useful information about lifetime extension

One of the main objectives of SE NAEK "Energoatom" in the framework of the implementation of provisions of the "Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2035" is extension of operational lifetime of existing NPP power units.

According to international experience, the extension of the design operational lifetime of power units is necessary not only for reasons of economic feasibility (financially, it is more than 20 times cheaper than building new facilities), such works are also justified by the fact that maintaining the existing fleet of reactor units will allow to use existing time resources to prepare for the construction of new power units, as well as provide the necessary level of NPP safety.

Operation of power units in the over-the-design period is a global practice. At domestic nuclear power plants, including SE Zaporizhzhia NPP, this work is carried out in accordance with the international standards of the IAEA and considering all the requirements of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine. The extension is a complex process that combines a whole range of scientific, technical and engineering activities, a large amount of work on the justification and upgrades, which are carried out on the basis of international safety experience. Ukraine has appropriate specialists and technological processes infrastructure, and also observes all requirements regarding durability and safety of power unit equipment, which operational lifetime was extended.

Now Ukrainian NPPs include nine power units operate in the over-the-design period, and four of them are power units of SE Zaporizhzhia NPP.

  • September 13, 2016, State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine affirmed a decision to extend power unit №1 operational lifetime till December 23, 2025
  • October 3, 2016 - power unit №2 operational lifetime extended till February 19, 2026
  • November 3, 2017 - power unit №3 operational lifetime extended till March 5, 2027
  • October 11, 2018, State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine affirmed a decision to extend power unit №4 operational lifetime and set date of the following Periodic Safety Reassessment of the power unit on April 04, 2028.

Power units that passed through the operational lifetime extension procedure were equipped with advance and modern equipment and innovative systems, the power units underwent comprehensive reconstruction and modernization. All implemented works completely correspond to IAEA international standards, Ukrainian legislation in area of nuclear regulations, and to international experience of nuclear facilities operation in the over-the-design period.

Now SE Zaporizhzhia NPP personnel actively work on preparations to power unit №5 operation lifetime extension, design lifetime of the power unit expires on May 27, 2020. Process of the operation lifetime extension at four SE Zaporizhzhia NPP power units showed greatly responsible, consistent and rational approach to implementation of all necessary actions as by NPP personnel, so and by population of the observation zone. ZNPP specialists are confident, that after the power units №1,2,3,4 operational lifetime extension and implementation of all works on modernization and introduction of newest technologies, the power units became much safer and effective then at the moment of their construction.

After ZNPP-4 and RNPP-3 obtained licenses for over-the-design operation, it became that two-thirds of Ukrainian NPPs are successfully operated in the over-the-design term now. It confirms once again, that Ukrainian nuclear power generation industry has excellent perspectives!
