Zaporizhzhia NPP hosted a workshop-forum “Professional development of women in nuclear power industry”

On September 20, 2021, Zaporizhzhia NPP hosted a workshop-forum "Professional Development of Women in Nuclear Power Industry”, organized by SE “NNEGC “Energoatom”, non-governmental organization “Women in Nuclear Ukraine” and the Trade Union of Nuclear Power Industry of Ukraine.

SE “NNEGC “Energoatom” and the non-governmental organization “WIN Ukraine” continue the program “Professional Development of Women in Nuclear Power Industry” which ensures compliance with the terms of the Memorandum of Cooperation. The main goal of this project is to adhere to the basic principles and implement the objectives of the Gender Policy of SE “NNEGC “Energoatom”.

Zaporizhzhia NPP has become one more venue for the workshop-forum “Professional Development of Women in Nuclear Power Industry”. The dynamic development of any company in current realities is impossible without ensuring equal rights for women and men. Namely, holding such events is extremely important to achieve this goal. I would like to note that Zaporizhzhia NPP employs 3 738 women, which is 33% of the staff; 183 women occupy management positions, including senior management. I am confident that today we will make a significant contribution to the implementation of the tasks of Gender Policy of “Energoatom”, and I hope for the further development of this platform,” said General Manager of Zaporizhzhia NPP Dmytro Verbytskyi at the forum opening.

Representatives of almost all departments of Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant took part in the workshop-forum.

The program of the workshop was divided into two sections. The first part of the event included a training section on the prospects and new trends in nuclear power industry with interesting reports and presentations, the main purpose of which was to debunk gender stereotypes. The second was a motivating part with an interactive lecture and practical exercises aimed at developing leadership for further personal and professional development.

Prior to the workshop, the participants took part in an anonymous survey on gender and equal opportunities for men and women, and at the event the attendees listened to speeches by experts and ambassadors of “WIN Ukraine”, representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Trade Union of Nuclear Power Industry.

“The mission of “WIN Ukraine” is to unite industry professionals despite the existing stereotypes that the nuclear sphere is purely male, as well as to promote gender balance in line with modern world trends. The scale of Zaporizhzhia NPP implies a similar scale of the path to achieve the “golden” gender balance. However, today we see a strong proactive position of the plant management, Trade Union of Nuclear Power Industry and ambassadors who support this movement. We have also managed to establish a dialogue with nuclear power plants and feel the leadership qualities and desire to develop professionally,” said Natalia Klos, Director of International Cooperation and Regional Development of “WIN Ukraine”.

Kateryna Pavlova, a “WiN Ukraine” expert, woman-electric power specialist, Head of International and Public Relations Department of the State Agency for Exclusion Area Management, addressed to her colleagues with encouraging speeches and examples of world practice of women struggle for their rights, as well as stories of their own professional development. "It is the balanced involvement of leaders, men and women, and that is crucial to the types of political, behavioral, environmental and cultural change that are needed to achieve effective gender parity in the nuclear field. And we see how Zaporizhzhia NPP is actively moving towards these changes, listening to the voice of its fellow activists, taking into account all the proposals for further implementation,” she said.

“We are constantly working with partners, civil society, and discussing why this is so important - gender balance and equal career opportunities for nuclear industry women. Today, our project covered the third site - Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and Ukraine. And I am glad to note that, first of all, gender policy is not a declarative document for the Company, but it means real actions. Secondly, this project is valuable because the voice of highly qualified employees (and there are simply no others in the Company) is heard and taken into account. “Energoatom” is a leader in electrical power industry in compliance with gender principles. We must serve as an example in the future, not only in our industry, but for the whole country,” said Renata Yaresko, Head of Public Relations Department, of SE “NNEGC “Energoatom” Communications Department.

The next workshop-forum “Professional Development of Women in Nuclear Power Industry”  will be held on the site of the South Ukrainian Power Complex on October 18, 2021.
