The meeting of the Board was opened by the SNRIU Chairman Grigoriy Plachkov: «The NPP units operation lifetime extension is implemented in accordance with Ukrainian Energy strategy until 2035, recently adopted by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. I’d like to note that Ukraine has a positive experience in this area. Operation lifetime of Rovno NPP Units 1 and 2, South Ukrainian NPP Units 1 and 2 and also Zaporozhye NPP Units 1 and 2 is already extended».
According to the Head of the Department, the procedure, which is used to implement the operation lifetime extension of nuclear facilities, completely meets the requirements of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and has no difference from the global practice. In particular it is affirmed by the conclusions made by Ukrainian delegation after the presentation of Ukrainian National Nuclear Safety report in the framework of the VII meeting on reviewing Nuclear Safety Convention.
Aleksandr Ostapovets, Zaporozhye NPP General Manager, reported about the readiness for Zaporozhye NPP Unit 3 operation lifetime extension. He noted that the operating organization implemented a full range of engineering and capital activities concerning the assessment of equipment technical configuration, safety improvement and revaluation, replacement of the life-expired equipment.
The results of nuclear and radiation safety state expertise of the Report on safety periodic safety review of Zaporozhye NPP Unit 3 were presented by Oleg Zelenyi, head of nuclear facilities strength and reliability department of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety. After that, the deputy head of SNRIU Directorate on Nuclear Facilities Safety Valeriy Bugai justified that Zaporozhye NPP Unit 3 has all the conditions for operating lifetime extension based inspection results.
SNRIU Board members voted for Zaporozhye NPP Unit 3 lifetime extension, one member had abstained. The unit operation lifetime is extended until March 5, 2027.
