The service life of Zaporizhzhia NPP Unit 5 has been extended

On January 4, 2021 in the online conference mode, the meeting of the SNRCU Board took place. It was dedicated to the extension of ZNPP Unit 5 in the beyond the design period based on the results of periodic safety reassessment.

The report on the readiness of ZNPP Unit 5 of ZNPP to extend the service life was made by Acting General Manager of Zaporizhzhia NPP Yuriy Kulba. He reported on the implementation of a set of works to assess the technical condition of equipment, improve and re-assess safety, replacement of equipment that has exhausted its resource.

The results of the State Expertise on Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Report on Zaporizhzhia NPP Unit 5 Periodic Safety Reassessment were presented by Oleg Zelenyi, Head of Nuclear Facility Strength and Reliability Analysis Department of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety.

The results of the inspection of the status of implementation of measures that had been incomplete at the time of ZNPP inspection of (November 9-13, 2020) were also considered. Rostyslav Baranovskyi, Head of the Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety at Zaporizhzhia NPP (as an independent department), reported on the state of affairs.

Valery Bugay, Deputy Director of the Department for Nuclear Facility Safety - Head of the Licensing Department of Operating Nuclear Installations, outlined the state of implementation of works on preparation of ZNPP Unit 5 for long-term operation.

The representatives of the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Environment, the SNRCU, SSTC NRS, SES, specialists of the Utility and Zaporizhzhia NPP joined the online conference.

Further to the discussions, the Board members supported the proposal to approve the Conclusion made by the State Expertise on Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Report on Periodic Safety Reassessment of ZNPP Unit 5 and set the date of the next periodic safety reassessment - May 27, 2030.
