A lead engineer of the Operating Experience Department participated in the training event organized by the IAEA

Oksana Vorobyova, Lead Engineer of Zaporizhzhia NPP Operating Experience Department, participated in the training event organized by the IAEA for the specialists of nuclear power plants and regulatory authorities. The four-day course was held in Vienna. Its subject was: “Operational reliability indicators enhancement. Analysis of the event root causes”.

The main purpose of the training was to familiarize the trainees with the effective methods of investigating the events that occur at NPPs and other enterprises. The participants were shown how to use different methods of analyzing the causes during investigations.

“Everything was very useful. We have been provided with best practices in operating a program of operating experience. They showed us how the IAEA proposed to apply investigative techniques and to analyze the root causes of the events. When comparing the system of organization and investigation of events, available at Zaporizhzhia NPP, with the requirements of the IAEA, we can conclude that we all in general meet the mentioned requirements. But any system can and should be improved. If the investigation correctly identifies the immediate and root causes of the event and their contributors, and developed and implemented effective corrective measures, it is likely to prevent such situations from happening again,“ Oksana Vorobyova, who heads the sector of analysis and operating experience in the department, said.

The organization of the development of effective corrective measures based on the results of the investigation and control of their implementation can significantly improve all the performance areas at the NPP - operations, maintenance, documentation development and application, training, and others. And it has a direct positive impact on the level of NPP safety culture.

The skills acquired will also be useful in the preparation for the future OSART Mission at Zaporizhzhia NPP in the area of Operating Experience and others.
