SFDS site location at ZNPP site is economically justified and complies with logical and safety consideration. High ZNPP units’ capacity stipulates presence of large amounts of spent fuel. ZNPP territory occupies large territory and has free space for SFDS site. Direct proximity of the storage site to the power units is beneficial from the point of view of transporting operations.
SFDS site is located in the North-East part of ZNPP site, on a relative level of 21.80. On its three sides, the site borders on the protected NPP site. SFDS design foresees construction of double fencing equipped with security means along the fourth SFDS side.
Territorially, SFDS objects are divided into 3 areas: loading, transportation and storage areas.

Loading area is located in the reactor compartments of the power units 1 - 6, namely – in the central hall at the level of 36,9, and in the transport corridor at the level of 0,0. In this areas, the existing transportation-technological equipment is used for loading and removal of the spent fuel: polar cranes and reloading machines.
Transportation area is a net of roads used for transportation of concrete casks loaded with spent nuclear fuel from the loading area to the storage area. The transportation is using specially designed cask transporter foreseen by the project.
Storage area - is SFDS site that serves for location of ventilated storage casks. For installation of the containers at the locations of their storage, the same cask transporter is used.
The storage site capacity is 100 casks; in perspective it will be extended to 380 casks. The casks are installed on the site vertically, in rows.
The reinforced concrete site can withstand dynamic loads from the transporter and total static load from the installed concrete casks. Besides, the site can be constructed stage by stage as required.
The existing areas, systems and equipment of the nuclear power plant shall be used for assurance of spent fuel storage, including the following: maintenance equipment, equipment of the storage and transportation area; decontamination system, power supply and communication systems, fire fighting system, ventilation and conditioning system.
