SFDS

All operations on spent fuel handling are performed by qualified personnel completed theoretic and practical training in part of safe operation of SFDS equipment.

All the transporting and technological operations on moving the spent nuclear fuel to SFDS for storage and operation of VCC and SFDS as a whole are done in compliance with detailed procedures for the equipment operation.

Empty multi-sealed basket is loaded to the transporting container  1.

Polar crane moves the reloading cask with the multi sealed basket to the universal cell of the spent fuel pond using the lifting arm  2.

24 fuel assemblies are loaded to the multi sealed basket by the reloading machine of the reactor hall; after this the protective lid is installed on it  3.

The reloading cask containing the basket with water then lifted from the spent fuel pond and transported to the decontamination chamber located in the central hall  4.

The reloading container and the multi sealed basket are monitored for radiation, decontaminated and monitored again. Then, in the decontamination pit a draining tube is installed and water from the MSB is drained (approximately 380-400 l), the protection lid is welded on and the MSB is tested for tightness. Next, the weld seam is inspected for its tightness with helium leak finder. The load-bearing lid is welded on top of the protective lid. The protective and load bearing lids are welded together via the valve hatch. The weld seam quality is controlled, water from the basket is removed and the internal volume of the basket is dried, after which the basket is filled with helium. After this, plugs cutting of the basket draining and drying valves are welded. After this the final isolation of the internal basket volume is done. Then the tightness and quality of weld joints of the load bearing lid are controlled and anti-corrosion coating is applied to the weld joints. The next step is rising of the reloading container with MSB from the decontamination pit; it is moved to the transport container and installed in the ventilated concrete cask. After this, hydraulic drives for gate opening/closure of reloading container gates are installed. The basket is lifted (not more for 10mm) in the reloading container over the gates and the gates are opened using hydraulic dives; the basket is lowered via the loading opening to the VCC. The crane pole is disconnected from the basket and the empty reloading container is lifted to the central hall and VSC lid is installed  5.

After this, ventilated concrete cask with MSB is transported with specialized transporter to the storage area and installed onsite ( 6  and  7 ).
