Documents and useful information about lifetime extension

The existence and development of any state are related to energy consumption. Electricity production per head of the population is considered as the most important characteristic of living standards in country.

Ukraine comes under the list of countries with a high output nuclear power generation industry. The Ukraine's peaceful atom has 15 units, with a capacity of 13,835 MW, producing more than half of the country's electricity. And almost half of all nuclear energy is produced by 6 units of Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest one in Ukraine and Europe.

One of the key tasks of the Ukrainian NPP Operator – SE “NNEGC “Energoatom” - within the framework of implementation of the provisions of the “Energy Strategy of Ukraine for the period until 2035” is to extend the life of the existing power units.

At Ukrainian nuclear power plants, including Zaporizhzhia NPP, the work on power unit life extension is performed in accordance with international standards of the IAEA and taking into account all the requirements of the SNRCU. The decision on the possibility to operate each power unit during the beyond-design period shall be made by the SNRCU on the basis of the results of its safety reassessment.

Currently, there are eleven extended-life power units in favour of Ukraine, and four of them are the units of Zaporizhzhia NPP.

  • September 13, 2016, State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine affirmed a decision to extend power unit №1 operational lifetime till December 23, 2025
  • October 3, 2016 - power unit №2 operational lifetime extended till February 19, 2026
  • November 3, 2017 - power unit №3 operational lifetime extended till March 5, 2027
  • October 11, 2018, State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine affirmed a decision to extend power unit №4 operational lifetime and set date of the following Periodic Safety Reassessment of the power unit on April 04, 2028.

Life extension is a complex process that integrates a whole set of scientific, technical and engineering activities, a large amount of justification work; the upgrades performed using the international safety experience.

The units that have already undergone a lifetime extension procedure are provided with installed modern equipment, implemented innovative systems, and a large-scale reconstruction and modernization have been performed there. All this is the guarantee of reliable and safe operation. All the performed works fully comply with the international standards of the IAEA, the legislation of Ukraine in the field of nuclear regulation, as well as the worldwide experience of operating nuclear facilities during the beyond-design period.

At present, the personnel of Zaporizhzhia NPP is actively preparing for the lifetime extension of Unit 5, its design lifetime ended in May 27, 2020.

The lifetime extension for four Zaporizhzhia NPP units has allowed to accumulate a tremendous experience that facilitates to make changes to the technical safety justification, to issue additional materials on safety analysis, to review approaches to implementation of a complex of lifetime extension measures, thereby optimizing and improving the process for safe and cost-effective use of power units during the beyond-design period.

The experience of extending the lifetime of two thirds of the state's nuclear fleet demonstrates that Ukrainian NPPs have an extraordinary safety margin. After extending the lifetime and carrying out all the activities on modernization and introduction of the latest technologies, the power units operate much safer and more efficiently than at the time of their commissioning.

The process of extending the lifetime of four Zaporizhzhia NPP units has demonstrated extraordinary responsibility, consistent and balanced attitude towards the implementation of all necessary measures not only by the personnel of the plant, but also by the public of the control area and local self-government bodies.

Public hearings and meetings with the public in the process of extending the lifetime of power units have created a lively dialogue between the nuclear experts and population of the control area, confirmed the interest in the leading energy providers - Zaporizhzhia NPP.

For its part, Zaporizhzhia NPP, as the largest facility of energy generation in Ukraine, is aware of its responsibility for safety, reliability and stability of electricity production and maintains unblemished reputation of a cost-effective and environmentally friendly enterprise.

We hope that the population of Zaporizhzhia NPP control area will continue to take an active civic stand in making a decision about the afterlife of the region and take an active part in the process of extension of Zaporizhzhia NPP Unit 5 lifetime.

Let us together facilitate reaching a positive decision to extend the lifetime of Zaporizhzhia NPP Unit 5 by the SNRCU!

Zaporizhzhia NPP - we are looking forward to the future with confidence!
